Music Fest!

June 21 – 25, 2010

MUSIC FEST! is an annual event, an opportunity for students age 12 – 18 to grow musically and socially in a day camp setting on the beautiful CSI campus!

Overview

Students participate in many areas of music and have the opportunity to interact with and learn from caring and capable instructors, who have been specially chosen for their expertise from throughout the northwest. On the last evening of the camp, family and friends are treated to a very special Music Fest concert free of charges!

Classes

There are a wide variety of classes to choose from! All students are required to take Choir and at least one Repertoire and Technique class in their major area in addition to technique classes in their Major. Beyond that, students have the opportunity to pick other elective classes to study during the week.

Cost

The basic cost of the camp is only $150. Additional (optional) camp costs are as follows:

  • Lunches – $25
  • Friday dinner - $6
  • Housing at $10 each night
  • Private lessons – $15/half hour
  • Camp Photograph – $10

Scholarships

  • Scholarships range from $10 to half tuition and are awarded through a special scholarship audition at the College of Southern Idaho in March. Scholarships are available in piano, voice, strings, or band instrument--one per student, please. Vocal and piano selections must be memorized, others may use music. Please have music ready for judges and provide your own accompanists. Five minutes is allowed. Judges will select all winners. CD's are allowed as audition IF received with registration and $25 non-refundable deposit by the March 10 deadline.
  • Deadline to apply for scholarships is March 10.
  • Auditions are March 26.
  • Students will be notified of results by April 15.

Faculty 2010

Music Fest is honored to host some of the most talented music teachers in the state and beyond! Here is a sample of the talent featured at the camp.

Linda Berg, Musical Theatre

Linda is the Director of the Capital City Children’s Chorus and the All City Elementary Honor Choir in Boise. Linda is and Adjunct Instructor of Voice at Boise State University. She holds a Master of Music from the University of Wisconsin. Linda has been a soloist in opera, oratorio, musical theatre, and recitals.

Kevin Brower, Choir

Kevin graduated from Utah State University and pursued a Masters Degree from BYU and later a Doctorate from Arizona State University. Kevin is currently the Chairman of the Music Department at BYU Idaho.

Marcellus Brown, Band/Brass

Marcellus is currently the Director of Bands at Boise State. A Detroit native, Marcellus taught at Chicago State University and Austana College. He holds a Masters of Music from the University of Michigan.

Sue Miller, Piano

A Twin Falls native, Sue has a Bachelor of Music from George Mason University, a Bachelor of Arts from Idaho State University, and a Maters Degree from Boise State University. Sue is a piano, organ, and theory instructor at the College of Southern Idaho.

Del Parkinson, Piano

Del has a Doctorate of Music from Indiana University. He has done graduate study at Julliard in New York and in London, England. Del Parkinson performed a debut recital at Carnegie Hall and is currently Professor of Piano at Boise State University.

Wendy Hartman, Strings

Wendy is the Orchestra Director at Boise High School and North Junior High School.  Ms. Hartman has been a cellist in the Boise Philharmonic since 1975 and holds Bachelor of Music degree from Boise State University.

Barbara Mix, Handbells, Organ

Graduate of University of Wyoming in Piano Performance and Music Education, K-12.  Currently has music studio teaching piano, church organ, and three handchime choirs for homeschooled youth. She is the organist, pianist, choir accompanist, and handbell director at First Presbyterian Church of Twin Falls.

Guest Clinician, Danny Lyons, Handbells

Solo handbell artist, handbell director, clinician. Performed solo handbells at international music festival in Novi Sad Serbia/Montenegro. One of only four ringers chosen nationwide as a member of the “Dream Team Quartet” at the Solo and Ensemble Extravaganza, Villanova University, Pennsylvania. Taught classes, performed at the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers Area IV Festival Conference in Jekyll Island, Georgia.  Performed in Nassau, Bahamas in conjunction with the Bahamas National Children's Chorus. Founder, comusical director of BellFest.  Director of handbells at Christ Episcopal Church in Pensacola, Florida. Handbell director at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida.  Steinway piano technician.
